My son is invited to a friend's 3rd birthday party and I don't know the little boy that well. I'm sure of his likes and dislikes or what he's really "into."
Does anyone have some neat ideas for a little boy that's turning three? I like to give gifts that lean toward the educational side, like books, but I also want it to be a fun gift. Maybe any really neat books that are favorites in your household?
Any suggestions are appreciated!

My son got his first tinker toys when he turned 3 and still plays with them ALL THE TIME - after 2 years!

My son will be 3 in a couple of weeks - he loves books by Jim & Kate McMullen. There are 3 of them - I Stink, I'm Dirty, and I'm Mighty. They are are fun books with great illustrations, told from the point of view of a garbage truck, a backhoe and a tugboat, respectively. My son's preschool teacher told me she found a copy of "I Stink" that comes with a CD that has a wonderful rendition of the story read aloud that all of the kids in the class love to hear.

If you like the Tinker Toys idea, I just saw a huge tin of them for sale at Costco yesterday.

My Little Sandbox is a popular toy for three and up. Each one is themed (Little Mermaid, Construction, Space, etc.), and the kids love them. You can see it/try it at Common Folk Kids in Crossroards & gift wrapping is free while you wait.
