Sugar and Spice

Spice things up! This fall, a brand new cooking school for kids is opening its oven doors. It's Little One's chance to do all of the stirring and mixing a young heart desires, and to go beyond the basics. Frog Legs Kids Culinary Academy is the latest project from Laura Vida Thompson, who teaches adult cooking classes at Sur La Table, and who for years sold her decorated cookies and candies to retailers including Williams-Sonoma and Crate and Barrel. Classes ($175 - $255/session) will be held in Thompson's Mount Baker home, and run once a week for seven weeks. Kiddos as young as age three are invited to learn to make applesauce, mac and cheese, pudding with homemade whipped cream, chicken fingers with sauces, mini turkey meatloaf, ravioli, and other tasty dishes. Class sessions begin next week!

Looking for a one-time class or a birthday party feast? Check out Apron, the cooking school that comes to your home with everything but the oven. Birthdays(2 hour party; $300/8 children) include set up and clean up, gift bags, an apron for the Birthday Chef, and instruction on making a smoothie, dessert, and entree; choose from pizza, pasta, quiche, or sushi. Private and group classes are always available, birthday or no!

A new way for parents to get in on the action: Order Seattle's own Chef Greg Johnson's DVD Chef and Father. Learn all you need to know to prepare Baby's first six months of organic, healthy solid food in your own kitchen. The program is as adorable as it is informative; learn from the easy-to-follow lessons of a world-class chef, and meet his family.
